Chair's Column: December 2019

Closing the year in the best possible way

By Albert C. Harvey

Happy Holidays from the Senior Lawyers Division.  Permit me to encourage you to use this time as an opportunity to support your national professional organization and in particularly, the Senior Lawyers Division.

Many of us use the end of the year as a time to support our favorite charities.  One of those for me, and I hope for you, is the American Bar Association Fund for Justice and Education (FJE).  The FJE is the 501(c)(3) charitable fund that supports the public service, policy, and education work of the American Bar Association.  FJE is also the home for the Programs Support Fund of the Senior Lawyers Division.  Funds given to the FJE and designated to the Senior Lawyer Division are used to support our CLE and public service work.  It is a variable source of funding for such programs as the Task Force on Opioids, voter education, and legal services for disaster relief.

The FJE is the primary agency for support of legal services for the ABA.  A gift to FJE will support legal services that benefit individuals by protecting their livelyhoods in ways that only our profession can.  FJE also supports the rule of law through several ABA entities, including the Senior Lawyers Division.  As we head toward the election of 2020, FJE will be supporting programs like that of the Senior Lawyers Division to educate voters on their rights, assist in registration, and provide assistance to state and local communities.

FJE offers legal opportunity scholarships for first year law students and sponsors the National Civics and Law Academy for high school students.  This year the emphasis will be on the 19th Amendment Centennial and Law Day 2020.

It is easy to make a donation.  Go to the ABA website and click on Fund for Justice and Education.  Or go to for email connection.  You can use your credit card to make your donation and to designate the Senior Lawyer Division as one of the recipients for your donation.  In the alternative send a check to the American Bar Association in care of Fund for Justice and Education, 321 North Clark Street, 20th Floor, Chicago, IL 60654.

Making a donation to the American Bar Association and to your Senior Lawyer Division will be a great way to end 2019 and help jump start our activities for 2020.
