Chair's Column: September 2018

Marvin S.C. Dang

Aloha (greetings) from Honolulu, Hawaii!

As the Chair of the Senior Lawyers Division for the 2018-2019 bar year, I want to thank you for reading this month’s issue of our Division’s Voice of Experience e-newsletter.

In each of my Chair’s columns, I want to introduce you to a Hawaiian word and connect that word to activities in our Division.

For this month’s column, the Hawaiian word is laulima,” which refers to teamwork, cooperation, and working together for a common goal.

For the 2018-2019 bar year, which runs from August 2018 to August 2019, I have selected the goals of “W-I-S-E”:

  • W” represents “Well-being.”  Our Division will focus on issues affecting the financial and physical well-being of our members and their families. Additionally, we must ensure that the financial well-being of our Division remains secure.
  • I” refers to “Innovative.” Division leaders and members need to be innovative by thinking “outside the box as we plan and implement programs and projects.
  • S” stands for “Service.” Our Division must continue to be of service to our members by providing them with valuable and important benefits.
  • "E” means “Experience.” Our Division’s strength is the collective experience of our 60,000 members with their collective experience.  We need to encourage our members to share their experience, knowledge, and insight.

Our Division has many opportunities for you―our experienced members―to volunteer your time and to share your experiences, knowledge, and insights.

If you enjoy writing articles, such as the ones in our monthly Voice of Experience e-newsletter or in our quarterly Experience magazine, we need you. We also need experienced authors for our books.

Or you might consider being an active volunteer with one of our Division’s practice and substantive law committees:  Alternative Dispute Resolution, Elder Abuse Prevention, Elder Law, Estate Planning, Ethics & Professionalism, Financial Services & Retirement, and Guardian & Guardian Alternatives.

Interested in assisting with CLEs?  The CLE Committee’s for you.  Our Member Benefits, Corporate Sponsorship, and Travel Committees also need assistance.

And the following outreach and service committees are seeking active volunteers: International Senior Lawyers, Pro Bono Senior Lawyers Center, and Diversity & Inclusion (ABA Goal III).

If you want to write articles, author books, or be an active volunteer on one (or more) of our Division’s committees, you can sign up by logging into myABA and clicking on SLD committees under "My Specialty Group Memberships & Committees." Or you can e-mail your interest to our Division’s staff at abasrlawyers@americanbar.org.

I encourage you to be part of our Division’s team of volunteers.  Through laulima―teamwork, cooperation, and working together for the common goal—our Senior Lawyers Division will continue its successes with volunteers like you. Thank you.
