Staying Ahead of the Technology Curve

New Year greetings to all Senior Lawyers and your families. This year, 2017, we will experience the swearing-in of the 45th president of the United States of America. In this country we change executives by ballot and not by bullet. It is this that makes us unique from many countries in the world.

Do you ever feel like you are behind the curve in this technical world? Senior Lawyers have experienced rapid and continual change with the speed of technology since the time when we were young lawyers. It seems that as soon as one format is introduced, something else replaces it. There are constant upgrades, updates and new versions. How do we keep up with all the apps, tools, social media, online services and security measures?

This month’s Voice of Experience gives us a myriad of advice, ideas, techniques and information to help us keep up with the millennials who have grown up with these platforms.

"Allen’s Guide to Online Shopping" by Jeffrey Allen gives an overview to the ever-growing occurrence of online shopping, from the convenience and dangers of shopping online to making sure you and your identity are not at risk when you make that purchase.

We are painfully aware that being secure and keeping our data safe is vitally important when going online. The executives of Sensei Enterprises Inc. author the article, "Cybersecurity Made Simple." They give a glossary of explanations and advice on the many technical terms we encounter in this cyber world we have been thrust into. Sensei Enterprises, Inc. is a legal technology, information security and digital forensics firm based in Fairfax, Virginia.

Seniors also want to remain fit and healthy. Ashley Hallene offers an article on several tools and the many features available to assist in keeping track of exercise, calories, sleep, heart rate, etc.

We can’t leave out Social Media in this issue. Cynthia Sharp tackles that for us in her article "Social Media Tools Can Help With Marketing, Research, Networking." She outlines strategies and tips to help you feel more comfortable using the many social media platforms that are available.

As you review these eclectic writings of the Senior Lawyers Division members and others, we are reminded of the many benefits we enjoy here in this country. We can appreciate things from online shopping to the many platforms of social media, technical tools and upgrades. Even though we are members of the Senior Lawyers Division, we must remain abreast of all new formats and rollouts. Personally, I am a dinosaur when it comes to understanding and appreciating some of the new technologies of this millennium, but dinosaur or not I must grapple with what I consider to be difficult-to-understand concepts. I’m sure this is not true of the rest of the Senior Lawyers Division, but certainly the articles in this issue of the Voice of Experience will help get us through.

As Mr. Allen opined, tablets and smart phones have allowed us to shop in relative safety no matter where we are. We may be at the gym, sitting behind our desks at work or wherever we wish to engage and have access. Hence, the technologies are available to us and we must gather the expertise to take advantage of all we have.

This issue of the Voice of Experience reminds our members of the different views available for consideration by all who take the opportunity to enjoy our e-newsletter.
