Partisanship in Action and Inaction

Warren Belmar

As hard as it is to imagine, political rhetoric in Wash- ington during the last few months has been even more partisan and divisive than in recent years, and the Democratic and Republican parties find themselves further polarized into positions that make it more difficult, if not impossible, for passage of legislation to address our pressing national and international issues. Indeed, the only legislative agreements likely to be reached before Congress leaves for its Christmas recess are temporary ones that leave real solutions for a future day, as I believe will have been the case once again with respect to the continuing budget deficit/debt-ceiling/sequester controversy.
