I remember growing up in Philadelphia and seeing old-looking signs at the public transportation stations that said, “NO EXPECTORATING.” I had no idea what that meant and asked my father. He said those signs were put up in 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic, and they meant, “Do not spit.”
