Working with an older adult who may be experiencing elder abuse? Need support considering options and strategies? Call the ABA Senior Lawyers Division elder abuse support helpline at 718-581-1613 on Friday, June 13 to speak with an experienced elder justice professional. The helpline will be staffed by a multidisciplinary team of attorneys and social workers from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM EDT.

‌In recognition of this year’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the SLD is teaming up with The Weinberg Center for Elder Justice, a NYC-based elder abuse safe haven to sponsor an elder abuse support helpline for ABA members working with older adult clients. Callers will speak with an experienced elder justice professional from The Weinberg Center’s team to get information and guidance on complex issues of abuse and exploitation that may be presenting during an attorney’s representation of an older adult.‌

Attorneys working with older adults must be adept at providing legal advice and services informed by the complex and interconnected physical, cognitive, social and financial changes that can come with age. These same changes may also put the older adult client at risk of abuse or even prevent them from recognizing that they are experiencing harm. The nature of this mistreatment, whether it is financial, physical, sexual or psychological in nature, often defies straightforward legal guidance or remedies, leaving the attorney struggling to effectively advocate for the older adult.

‌Information through the elder abuse support helpline is intended to provide information and resources on elder abuse and older adults and is not intended to constitute legal advice.
