Get the SciTech Edge: Membership & Diversity Committee News

Charlene C. Goldfield and Christopher A. Suarez

In the past few weeks, during ABA membership meetings, the word value has been a resounding theme. What is the value of an ABA membership and especially, a SciTech membership? As co-chairs of the Membership and Diversity Committee (MAD), it is up to us to showcase that value to current and potential members. Value is the importance, worth, or usefulness in something. With busy schedules and the “new normal,” we all are realizing more than ever that our time is scarce, and we should invest ourselves in activities that align with our values. We can honestly say as young attorneys that our Section membership has provided us leadership opportunities and valuable skills, helping us to become subject-matter experts in our legal field through the editing of articles and books.

To our law student members overwhelmed with class work, extracurricular activities, and internships and to those of you graduating this year who are preoccupied with job searches and wondering what is next after three years of rigorous legal training, we know the last thing you may want is to add more to your plate; but we can assure you that a SciTech membership is invaluable. Our law students are the future of SciTech. You can join our Law Student Engagement Committee, assist our leaders with hosting webinars and writing timely articles for our newsletter or magazine, or participate in our new mentorship program—all resources that we hope have positively supplemented your law school curriculum. As you prepare to graduate, we hope you continue your participation as you transition to this new phase in your legal career. It is our hope that you network and thrive with your membership and eventually become a future leader of SciTech. In celebration of ABA 3L Week, SciTech provided our graduating law students with information on how to continue their ABA and SciTech membership, and hosted a panel to discuss graduation, job searches, and involvement with the ABA and SciTech.

For our current members, it has been SciTech’s goal to provide you with valuable resources that make you stand out. Just by being a paid member of SciTech, you allow us the ability to present you with timely CLE webinars and conferences and to be a resource on all things science and technology à la carte just like this current edition of The SciTech Lawyer. As you progress in your professional endeavors, we invite you to participate in panels; contribute written work to articles or books; or serve as a mentor.
