FDA Formally Announces Rulemaking to Amend Definition of Biological Product

The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act created an abbreviated pathway for FDA licensure of a drug that is “biosimilar” to a previously licensed biological product, defined to include a “protein (except any chemically synthesized polypeptide).” The rulemaking offers to clarify existing FDA policy on interpretation of that phrase.
