RPTE Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee Book Club: The Anxious Lawyer Book Club Fireside Chat and Discussion

Jeena Cho

Join Jeena Cho, author of the bestselling book, The Anxious Lawyer for a fireside chat a discussion on how the practice of mindfulness can help lawyers reduce stress/anxiety and lead to a more joyful and satisfying law practice.

Recent studies show that lawyers struggle with a very high rate of stress, anxiety, and mental health issues. A cornerstone of being a good lawyer requires the lawyer to be able to maintain their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

As lawyers, we can be incredibly demanding of ourselves, struggle with perfectionist tendencies, and feel as though we’re not living up to both internal and external expectations.

Our legal training makes lawyers more prone to negativity bias. Additionally, we are often balancing many different professionals and personal obligations and responsibilities. This may lead us to feel haggard with the overwhelming to-do list and cognitive load that comes with it.

Mindfulness, the practice of being in the present moment with compassionate awareness can be used to slow down, experience more ease, and regularly practice intentionally letting go of stress and anxiety. It’s also a tool lawyers can use to overcome self-defeating thoughts and increase self-awareness.
