RPTE DEI Book Club: Owning Our Values

Natasha Varyani

The phrase "systemic racism" frequently occurs in our modern discourse. The subject of our upcoming book club, "Owning Our Values" seeks to examine in detail what is meant by this phrase through the lens of Property Law. By inspecting the history of some of the most commonly used doctrines, including easements, covenants, real estate financing, zoning & land use, a picture of our nation's story as it pertains to racial dynamics emerges.

From the author, Natasha Varyani, Sullivan & Worcester, Boston, MA: Though this book was intended for law students, speaking with practitioners about the history the rules that are commonly used has proved to be a rich experience that informs and enriches our awareness, empathy and lawyering skills. Each chapter is divided into two parts: the first attending to the history of the doctrine, and the second intended to support law students to assist in honing ability to conduct a legal analysis; in this discussion we will be focused on the first part of each chapter.
