A Consumer’s Guide to Buying Your First Home


This 20-minute video, produced by the ABA Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law and the ABA Commission on Hispanic Legal Rights & Responsibilities, walks a prospective homebuyer through the steps a consumer should take in buying a home.

The goal of the video is to help Hispanics, a group disproportionately affected during the mortgage foreclosure crisis that emerged in 2009, be well informed about the home-buying process.

Prior to the real estate collapse, experts said many Hispanic families did not fully understand the mechanics of buying a home, making them vulnerable to unfavorable purchase and financing contracts. Through the video, we hope to make future homebuyers more comfortable in navigating the process as well as provide a broader educational resource.

To complement the information in the video, resource pages are available in both English and Spanish with guides that offer Hispanics and others in the home-buying process information about finding a housing advisor, things to look for in the home purchase contract, information about financing options, and more.
