In Palazzolo v. Rhode Island, 121 S. Ct. 2448 (2001), the U.S. Supreme Court addressed the effect that "notice" of an existing land-use regulation has on the two principal classes of regulatory takings: partial and total. The Court held that acquisition of title after the effective date of a regulation does not automatically bar either one.
