This program took place during the 2019 ABA Midyear Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Program Description

Join the American Bar Association’s Commission on Immigration in previewing an update to its report, “Reforming the Immigration System: Proposals to Promote Independence, Fairness, Efficiency, and Professionalism in the Adjudication of Removal Cases.” The 2019 Update Report analyzes distinct parts of the immigration enforcement and adjudication systems and chronicles changes to the system over the past eight years. The report further describes how these new circumstances bring greater urgency to the call for legislation to systematically reform our immigration system.

Recent political and legal developments have exposed the fragility of our administrative systems. Today, our nation’s immigration courts and other adjudicative systems face untenable backlogs, and increasing concerns about due process and independence. Against this backdrop, our Update Report serves as a marker for what must be done to provide a more just and equitable system. Join us as we discuss the lessons learned since the publication of the 2010 report, and an overview of the 2019 Update Report’s blue print for improving the immigration system— to protect the most vulnerable, while also promoting fairness and due process.

As part of this program we will honor Lawrence A. Schneider, Senior Counsel in the Washington, D.C. office of Arnold & Porter, and his team of dedicated colleagues, who have spearheaded much of the work on this Update Report.
