Judge Hoyos was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton on Sept. 8, 2014. He was elected in 2016, and his current term expires Jan. 2023.
Judge Hoyos has a broad background as both a criminal prosecutor and defense attorney. Most recently, he served as a prosecutor in Ramsey County where he handled felony cases, focusing primarily on violent crimes. Before that, he spent nearly 15 years as a public defender. During his career, Judge Hoyos tried more than 100 felony jury trials.
Judge Hoyos earned his law degree from the William Mitchell College of Law and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
