In a January 2024 poll, 49% of respondents reported that they expect the losing side of the 2024 election to react with violence. While 78% of respondents (including 70% of Republicans) disapproved of the "actions taken by the people who forced their way into the U.S. Capitol" on January 6, 2021, one-third of respondents also described those people as “defending freedom.” Over two-thirds of respondents believed that democracy was under threat, with 40% expressing that President Biden was not the legitimate winner of the 2020 election.
