Many of us are aware of the dramatic increase in adults, families and unaccompanied children from Central America crossing into Texas. The ABA is addressing this humanitarian crisis in several ways with the ABA Commission on Immigration taking the lead.
Additionally, just last month, President Silkenat sent a statement to the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives regarding the surge of unaccompanied children. Read the statement here.
Upcoming efforts include a late July trip by ABA leaders to the Texas border with an eye toward increasing ABA help.
ABA Center on Children and the Law efforts include supporting state systems dealing with children separated from their parents as a result of immigration enforcement. Center attorneys Cristina Ritchie Cooper, Scott Trowbridge and consultant Ann Park are developing checklists for state courts, attorneys, and child welfare agencies working with immigrant children and parents in the child welfare system.
