Will registering my business name locally get me a trademark?
Getting a trademark can be a somewhat expensive, time-consuming process, and one that probably isn't necessary for most start-ups, who are probably more concerned with surviving the first year than with conquering the world.
Federal trademark protection is far more complete than the protections for your business name available through the states. If your business is going to be active in several states, or if you foresee that your trademark is going to be a valuable asset, then you’re well advised to seed to register it with the federal government. You’ll need a lawyer’s help.
