Notice of Public Hearing
Friday, May 29, 1998
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
LaSalle Room, Bonaventure Hilton
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
In Conjunction with the 24th National Conference on Professional Responsibility.
The Ethics 2000 Commission is undertaking a review of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. This hearing is one of a series (other hearings are not yet scheduled.)
This hearing is an opportunity for the Commission to hear from a broad range of interested persons and organizations regarding recommendations for improvements to the Model Rules. The Commission is seeking specific, detailed statements on how the current Rules should be changed or on suggested new Rules. The Commission welcomes oral and written testimony from interested groups or persons. Persons wishing to testify are requested to submit written testimony in advance of the hearing. Please refer to the attached Hearing Guidelines for additional information.
Among the developments the Commission plans to review are variations in the Rules as they have been adopted by the states; areas of inconsistency or dissonance from Rule to Rule or Rule to Comment; the American Law Institute's Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers; new forms of technology; public perceptions; multi-jurisdictional practice; alternative dispute resolution; and the growth of specialized practice areas. The Commission will also be considering ways to improve the format of the current Rules and Comments and the addition of "best practice" aspirational statements.
