Sumbal Mahmud is an advocate, a humanitarian and professional speaker. Ms. Mahmud’s legal work includes serving the state administration as an Administrative Law Judge in the Department of Human Services and serving the Federal government as an Asylum Officer with the Department of Homeland Security. She previously worked as in house counsel for Best Buy and as an associate attorney.
Ms. Mahmud has over fourteen years working at the American Bar Association as a Presidential Appointee to the following committees: Standing Committee on Public Education (2018-current), Council for Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Educational Pipeline (2007-2010 & 2014-2018), Coalition on Racial and Ethnic Justice (2010-2013). She was also an Ambassador in the ABA Business Law Section from 2011-2013.
Ms. Mahmud is the past president of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). She served for six years on the national board of NAPABA, served a term on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota State Bar Association and is currently a member of the ABA House of Delegates and serves as a member of the Select Committee.
