The DEPS program operates under the direction of a licensed attorney who specializes in estate planning. To engage community members, the DEPS program is promoted through the local library wherein the public can sign up to attend a seminar to learn more about the importance of estate planning and how the DEPS program can help them in preparing the necessary documents for free.
During the first half of the class, students learn the essence of estate planning law, as well as the estate planning documents used in practice. In the second half of the class, the attorney and the students hold a seminar at the local library for the public. At the end of the seminar, those interested can meet with students for a client intake. Typically, students are assigned to 2 - 4 clients and are responsible to connect with their clients and get the necessary information to complete the estate planning forms. Once all documents are completed and approved by the attorney, an execution date is scheduled. Under direct supervision, students meet with their assigned clients and go over all the forms prior to the actual signing.
