As the Paraprofessional Coordinator for six of Reed Smith’s United States offices, Jane Anne became a member of the International Practice Management Association, IPMA. After attending the first conference and being impressed with the IPMA’s energy, she decided to become an active member and joined the Membership Committee. Within two years she chaired the committee and then was invited to run for the Board as Vice President, Membership. She is finishing her second year on the Board and is currently running for re-election.
As a representative of the IPMA Board of Directors, I was asked to attend the two-day meeting of the Conclave, held in Chicago in April 2019. The Conclave is a group of paralegal education and professional associations that met for the first time in approximately ten years to discuss topics of common interest and to determine if any united action could be taken to benefit the common needs and goals of the organizations. The discussions were stimulating, and it was fascinating to hear the different perspectives on paralegal education and how we might make an impact on the careers of future paralegals. I met Tom McClure and Jessica Watson at the Conclave and after discussing the events of the meeting, Jessica asked if I would like to do a site visit. I am set to do my first one next week! A few months later, the IPMA Executive Director asked if I would represent the IPMA on the ABA Approval Commission. Again, I said yes. I have enjoyed my life as a paralegal and it has provided me with an intellectually stimulating career, a good livelihood, and the opportunity to utilize management and organizational skills. Serving on the Commission will enable me to pay this forward by working to ensure that the paralegals of the future are well prepared for the jobs of the future. I will bring a unique perspective as someone who works in paralegal management in an international law firm who regularly seeks to hire qualified candidates to staff assignments across the broad range of transactional, corporate and litigation paralegal work. I am looking forward to working with everyone on the Commission.
