What makes business development hard? What are the most common obstacles, and what do we need to do to overcome them?

In my experience, some of the toughest challenges faced in growing legal practices can be the ones in our heads—the thinking traps that prevent us from making the choices and taking the actions that will carry us forward.

Three common thinking traps to watch for in your practice include thinking that you will actually get to it later, thinking that there is no business opportunity because the person already has legal counsel, and thinking that the lawyer-client relationship is over once the file is closed.
