Ethics & Professionalism

About the Committee

Mission

The Ethics & Professionalism Committee examines issues of ethics and professionalism through the particular lens of litigation practice. The mission is to be: (1) proactive, in identifying potential changes to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct to accommodate the unique experiences of litigators; (2) reactive, in commenting on proposed rule changes initiated by others; and (3) instructive, in continuously striving to educate litigators about the boundaries within which they are required to navigate their practices. The committee also promotes professionalism in litigation. The committee pursues this mission through a combination of programming and publications.

Message from the Chairs

The Ethics and Professionalism Committee focuses on the substantive body of ethical rules governing lawyers’ conduct, as well as broader issues of professionalism. On our website, you can find newsletters, Practice Points, Sound Advice podcasts, and other content discussing the latest developments in ethics and professionalism. We also sponsor CLE programs at ABA conferences and meetings, and conduct Roundtables and webinars, which provide our committee members remote access to educational presentations without the burden of travel.

We are actively searching for members to serve on one of our subcommittees. Participation in a subcommittee is an excellent way to network with fellow attorneys from all over the country, to support your personal business development efforts, and to play an important role in educating lawyers. One of our goals this year is to increase the amount of content we generate, meaning that there will be plenty of avenues for you and others you recruit to get published and become involved in program presentations. We will also need help in continuing to build the committee’s website (including more articles, practice points, and podcasts), and to identify and develop CLE programs as well as distance learning events (webinars, Roundtables, and regional meetings). If you are interested in serving on one of our subcommittees, or are simply interested in submitting an article or Sound Advice podcast for our website, please let us know. We welcome any and all involvement from our committee membership.

If you would like a chance to interact with the committee’s members before deciding which subcommittee you would like to join, we invite you to participate in one of our monthly committee teleconferences (the first Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m. Eastern). Please contact one of us for call-in information.

If COVID-19 allows for an in-person meeting at the Section Annual Conference in Houston, May 5-7, 2021, we hope you will be there and join us for a committee dinner, which will give our members an opportunity to network and get to know each other better.

If you would like to be actively involved with the Ethics and Professionalism Committee, or if you want additional information about the Committee, please feel free to call or email Laurie Daniel at is 404-433-6430 (laurie.daniel@hklaw.com), Laura Lin at 415-512-4034,  (laura.lin@mto.com), or John Barkett at (305) 960-6931 (jbarkett@shb.com)
