Implications of the International Green Construction Code

The IgCC represents a paradigm shift in green building, and prudent construction lawyers should prepare themselves now to protect clients.

Since the initial launch of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system, the green-building movement has seen significant and unprecedented growth in both the public and private sectors. In addition, green building has undergone a continuous evolution, including the development of multiple green-building rating systems, the introduction of legislation incentivizing or mandating sustainability requirements or energyefficiency measures to be incorporated into projects, the creation of green training and certification programs for individual project participants, the development of new insurance products relating to green and sustainable building, and the emergence of new contract forms addressing the allocation of responsibility for green-building certification. Now, the greenbuilding movement is preparing for its next major paradigm shift: green building codes.
