An attorney since 1978, Marvin Dang is the Managing Member of the Law Offices of Marvin S. C. Dang, LLLC. Started by Marvin in 1981, the five-attorney law firm focuses on civil litigation, creditors’ rights law, lobbying, government relations, legislation, real estate transactions, estate planning, and probate. His clients are major national and local financial institutions and lenders. Separately, Marvin is also a partner in Nelson & Kennard, which is a California law firm doing business in 8 states; he co-manages the Hawaii office which focuses on civil litigation.

Marvin was Senior Vice President, Secretary, Director, and in-house Counsel of an FDIC-insured Hawaii financial institution for 11 years. In the 1990s, he was a hearings officer (per diem) with the Hawaii State Judiciary. During the 1980s, he served as a State Representative in the Hawaii State House of Representatives and was an Assistant Minority Floor Leader.

Beginning in 1976, Marvin has been actively involved with the American Bar Association. He’s held leadership positions in four Divisions: Senior Lawyers Division (Immediate Past Chair 2019-2020, Chair 2018-2019, Council Member); Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division (Division Director, Council Member); Young Lawyers Division (Executive Council Member, District Representative); and Law Student Division (Circuit Governor).

Marvin has been a member of the ABA Board of Governors since 2020. He’s on the Board’s Member Services Committee and Governance Committee. He had served on the Board’s Profession, Public Service and Diversity Committee and chaired the Awards Subcommittee (2021-2022).

Marvin serves in the ABA House of Delegates. He was appointed in 2018 as a Minority Member-at-Large on the ABA Nominating Committee and was on its Steering Committee.

Marvin has received ABA Presidential appointments starting in 1979 to standing and special committees and other entities: Council of the Fund for Justice and Education (FJE), Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession, Standing Committee on Publishing Oversight, Coalition for Justice, Standing Committee on Delivery of Legal Services, Standing Committee on Group and Prepaid Legal Services, Standing Committee on Law and the Electoral Process, and Special Committee on Youth Education for Citizenship.

He’s a member of the FJE President’s Club and the FJE Society of Saratoga.

Starting in 2007, Marvin has participated in ABA Day in Washington, D.C. He’s served on the ABA Day Planning Committee.

Marvin was a Planning Committee member for the ABA Section Officers Conference’s 2019 and the 2023 Fall Leadership Conference.

He is a Sustaining Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

Among Marvin’s leadership positions in Hawaii are current Director and immediate past Chair, Collection Law Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association; current Director, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association – Hawaii; current Secretary-Treasurer and former President, Hawaii Financial Services Association; former Vice Chair and Acting Chair, Hawaii Mortgage Foreclosure Task Force; and former Vice Chair, Hawaii Identity Theft Task Force.

Nationally, Marvin has been a leader in the National Creditors Bar Association (Parliamentarian [an officer position], Director) and the George Washington University Law Alumni Association (President-elect, Director).

Marvin earned his J.D. degree from the George Washington University Law School (1978) and his B.A. degree from the University of Hawaii (1974). He graduated in 1971 from Punahou School in Honolulu.

Marvin, his wife Dr. Seulyn Au, and their three children reside in Honolulu.
