Janet Stearns is Dean of Students & Lecturer in Law at the University of Miami School of Law. Dean Stearns started her career at the University of Miami School of Law in 1999, and became Dean of Students in 2007. Dean Stearns has been passionate about wellness initiatives at Miami Law School, including the Fall Wellness Week, the spring Mental Health Day, and a weekly Dean of Students Constitutional (walk) around the campus. At the University of Miami, she serves as a member of the President’s Coalition the (UM) President’s Coalition on Sexual Violence Prevention and Education, a member of the (UM) President’s Commission on Alcohol and Other Drugs, and a member of the UM Wellness Center Advisory Board.
Dean Stearns is chair of the American Association of Law Schools Student Services Section and a member of the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyers Assistance Programs. She has been speaking nationally, writing and podcasting on the Task Force for Lawyer Wellness and its Impact on Law Schools. She recently co-authored article in the ABA Student Lawyer, Two Deans Answer the Law School Wellness Questions They Hear Most.
A native of New York, she is a graduate of Yale College (1984) and Yale Law School (1988). She was admitted to the bar in Connecticut (1989) and Washington State (1994).
