Today’s Law Students Are the Future Guardians of Justice

Lacy L Durham

Summary

  • Justice has never been secured by those seeking comfort or convenience. It has always depended on people who stand tall when others waver, who press forward even when the path is uncertain.
  • If the law is under attack, we must defend it. If fairness is in jeopardy, we must champion it.
  • It is not the law that changes the world—it is lawyers who do.

The very foundation of justice is under siege. Lawyers and judges—once revered as the steadfast guardians of democracy—now face relentless scrutiny, mounting political pressure, and even threats simply for upholding the sacred rule of law. Institutions designed to ensure fairness, accountability, and equality are being tested like never before in our lifetime. This is no time for hesitation; this is a time for action. The fight for justice is not merely important; it is imperative.

I know it can feel disheartening, even overwhelming, to witness a system under such strain. But let me remind you of Charles Hamilton Houston’s urgent words:

A lawyer is either a social engineer or a parasite on society. . . . A social engineer [is] a highly skilled, perceptive, sensitive lawyer who [understands] the Constitution of the United States and [knows] how to explore its uses in the solving of problems of local communities and in bettering conditions of the underprivileged citizens.

The world already has enough parasites. What it needs now—more than ever—are guardians of justice and fearless social engineers. That’s precisely what you, as law students, are called to be. This is the moment when your resolve is tested, and you must rise to meet it.

A Law Degree Is the Most Powerful Tool for Change

Justice has never been secured by those seeking comfort or convenience. It has always depended on people who stand tall when others waver, who press forward even when the path is uncertain. You are not simply pursuing a legal career but preparing to wield the most powerful tool for change. History shows us that every major civil rights victory, every step toward progress, was won because lawyers refused to relent. They understood a crucial truth: justice is not inevitable—it is earned through courage and persistence.

Yes, the road ahead will be challenging. But if the law is under attack, we must be its defenders. If fairness is in jeopardy, we must become its champions. Here’s the most powerful part: you don’t have to wait. You already possess the voice, the passion, and the potential to make an impact. You can begin making a difference today through the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice (CRSJ). By joining CRSJ, you can access mentorship, networking, groundbreaking programs, and collaboration opportunities with some of the nation’s most dedicated civil rights attorneys. You will be part of a movement that doesn’t just speak of justice—it fights for it.

The Future of Justice Is Being Shaped Right Now

The future of justice is being shaped right now. Will you be one of its architects? Stand tall. You are part of something far greater than yourself—a legacy of those who have used their knowledge, their voice, and their unyielding courage to create lasting change. The world will test your resolve, but remember this: it is not the law that changes the world—it is lawyers who do. Be a protector of justice. Be a social engineer. And above all, be relentless!
