The Law Student Division is currently accepting applications for the Delegate of Wellness & Mental Health Council position! Once the individual has been chosen, the Delegate will begin their term effective immediately. The application will close on Monday, September 30, 2024 at 5 p.m. CDT. Job Description

  • Develop and oversee wellness and mental health programs for law students, such as workshops, seminars, support groups, or similar held during the Midyear and/or Annual Meetings.
  • Curate and disseminate a comprehensive list of mental health resources, including counseling services, hotlines, and online tools, tailored to the needs of law students.
  • Plan and execute campaigns to raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and promote the importance of seeking help among law students in collaboration with the Delegate of Communications, Publications, and Outreach.
  • Chair the Division’s Wellness Committee
  • Establish and maintain peer support networks where law students can share experiences and offer mutual support. Hold an open forum at least once a month, open to all law students, where they can bring up any concerns regarding wellness and mental health. Prepare an agenda for this meeting to ensure it is beneficial even if no specific concerns are raised. Bring any concerns brought up in this meeting to the council during council meetings.
  • Represent the Division on matters related to mental health and wellness in the Association House of Delegates. Advocate for policies and initiatives within the Association that prioritize mental health and wellness for law students.
  • Keep the Division Council and the Assembly informed of wellness and mental health initiatives, activities, and resources. Oversee and communicate regularly with the Council, liaisons to ABA entities, and Assembly on wellness and mental health matters.
  • Organize and coordinate wellness events to engage and support law students.
  • Promote the use of ABA’s on-demand well-being programs and resources, ensuring law students are aware of available support.
  • Sit as a member of the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs (CoLAP) committee, contributing to broader ABA initiatives on lawyer well-being.

Eligibility

To be certified as a candidate, an individual must be:

  • A law student attending an ABA-approved law school;
  • An ABA Law Student Division member for the current bar year by the filing deadline;
  • Premium Law Student Division member;
  • A law student in good standing at law school (not on academic probation or suspension) during the academic year;
  • A law student who has not received his/her first degree in law;
  • A law student attending law school during the academic year subsequent to June 1, 2023;
  • A law student who has received the approval of his/her law school dean to run for office. All application forms must be approved and signed by each candidate’s dean; and
  • A law student who is in compliance with the submission deadlines and requirements
