The Law Practice Division (LP) continues to expand our Leadership offerings for all American Bar Association members who opt into the Law Practice Division for free as an included value of their membership. It’s core to who we are as a Division and adds to our Management, Technology, Finance and Marketing resources for practicing attorneys. '

LP has amazing committees, with subject matter experts, developing content on your behalf. I wanted to highlight our Lawyer Leadership and Management committee and their Lawyer Leadership Resource Center. They recognize that leadership is about influence and all lawyers influence others: clients, those they work with and those in the communities they serve. The purpose of the Lawyer Leadership Resource Center is to provide lawyers with a gateway to available resources in the area of lawyer leadership and management.

We have a leadership portal that includes:

Lawyer Leadership Sample Repository

A wide array of forms and policy resources for lawyers and law firm leaders to manage and lead a law firm. Topics include organizational form, accounting and billing, job descriptions, facilities lease, ethics and professionalism, strategic opportunities procedures, management and committee structures, lawyer and personnel evaluation, attorney advancement, retirement and quality of life.

Leadership Publications and Writing

An organized list of books, articles, and other resources on leadership and management for the legal profession. Listed items come from both within and outside the ABA and have been categorized by topic for easy reference and access.

Lawyer Leader Collaborative Engagement

Supportive communication among those experiencing similar, and often difficult, challenges in law firm leadership is hard to find. We cordially invite you to join our Managing Partners Community to ask questions of other managing partners, share ideas and concerns and add your voice to the community. Rather than create yet another new login to remember, our community is a private unlisted group on LinkedIn, a platform used by 97 percent of lawyers according to the ABA’s 2022 ABA Technology Survey Report. To join, please visit us via this link to request personal access to the group. Our administrators will review your request and provide access to any law firm managing partner regardless of ABA membership. Feel free to share the link with other managing partners; only managing partners and those in similar law firm leadership roles (managing shareholder, lawyer CEO, etc.) will be admitted to this private group.

The Lawyer Leadership Mastermind Series

Join your fellow managing partners, practice group leaders and other law firm leaders for mastermind-style discussions of some of the most pressing issues facing law firms today. Masterminds are peer-to-peer discussion groups used to help members solve their problems with input and advice from the other participants.

And we have even more programs in the pipeline to better serve your professional needs and growth. Consider joining the joint Spring Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, featuring the Young Lawyers Division; Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division; and LP. There we will debut our Law Practice Bootcamp that will support your practice management training needs and we plan to debut more training modules in Bar Year 2025. We hope to see you there!
