Martha Fay Africa Golden Hammer Award

About the Award

The ABA Law Practice Division, through the ABA Women Rainmakers, under the leadership of Martha Fay “Marty” Africa, established the annual Golden Hammer Award to recognize the work of individuals/entities that help promote women and diverse attorneys in the Division, the ABA, and the profession.

About Martha "Marty" Fay Africa

A founding member of global legal services firm Major Lindsey & Africa, Marty was the founder of the ABA Women Rainmakers. She was known for her great passion and many contributions to the legal profession as she focused on the advancement of women and minorities. On January 22, 2015, she passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Requirements and Criteria


The recipient may demonstrate a commitment to diversity through any one of the following activities:

  • Achievement of leadership position(s) that advance women and diverse attorneys in the practice of law
  • Personal mentoring or similar activities that foster and encourage participation of women and diverse attorneys in the practice of law
  • Creation of an environment that eliminates barriers to women and diverse attorneys and thus promotes the full contribution and participation by all in the legal profession
  • Other achievements, activities, programs, policies, or initiatives that are designed to increase the participation and promotion of women and diverse attorneys in the practice of law

The 2019 award will be presented at the annual ABA Law Practice Division Mid-Year Meeting.
