World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Webinars

This programming series commemorates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by providing older adults and their families with information they need about common issues in elder abuse. We will be releasing webinars weekly throughout the month of June, to celebrate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th.

Webinar 1: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - An Introduction

Panelists: Jennifer Spoeri and Lori Mars

Jennifer Spoeri is the Executive Director for the National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA). She has 18 years of Adult Protective Services (APS) experience in Philadelphia, the last 3 years serving as the Director.

Lori Mars, JD, LLM, is the Director of the National Center on Elder Abuse and Elder Abuse Guide for Law Enforcement. She is an assistant professor of clinical family medicine in the Department of Family Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Webinar 2: Technology-Based Scams and How You Can Fight Back

Panelists: Eric Drogin and Ronald Long

Eric Drogin is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology, a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and a Diplomate and former President of the American Board of Forensic Psychology. Dr. Drogin currently holds faculty appointments with Harvard Medical School, the Harvard Mass General Brigham Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Harvard Medical School Psychiatry Residency Training Program, and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Harvard Psychiatry Residency Training Program. He is currently the Chair of the Commission on Law and Aging.

Ronald Long is a consultant at Stevens & Lee who focuses on helping financial services firms prevent or mitigate harm related to elder financial exploitation, scams and other fraud directed at older and otherwise at-risk investors. He serves as a liaison to the Commission on Law and Aging.

Webinar 3: Innovations in Elder Justice

Panelists: Mary Jane Ciccarello, Lisa Nerenberg, Carol Sewell, Jessica Brock

Mary Jane Ciccarello is Director of the Borchard Center on Law & Aging, which works through education, research and service to help improve the quality of life for older adults. She has served in that capacity since January 2018.

Lisa Nerenberg has been a leader in the field of elder abuse prevention for over 35 years. She is the founding Executive Director and current Director of Special Projects for the California Elder Justice Coalition, which was formed in 2012 to provide a voice from the field to policy makers.

Carol Sewell is the Policy Director of the California Elder Justice Coalition, where she leads the A*Team project and directs CEJC's statewide network of local multidisciplinary teams. Prior to coming to CEJC, she served as the Legislative Director of the California Commission on Aging.

Jessica Brock is Senior Attorney/Chief Counsel with the Commission on Law and Aging. Prior to joining the Commission, she directed the LAVA (Legal Assistance for Victimized Adults) Project at Indiana Legal Services, which provides free, civil legal assistance to older adults and endangered adults who experience abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

Micah D. Hall is the managing attorney at the Hall Law Firm LLC, a firm that focuses on trusts, estates, and guardianship cases. Her prior experience includes time in government, academia, and as a municipal judge.

Sandra D. Glazier is the Attorney and Founding Member at Sandra D Glazier P.C; her practice is concentrated in the areas of family law, probate litigation, estate planning and probate and trust administration.. She is the co-author of the ABA book Undue Influence and Vulnerable Adults.

Webinar 5: Elder Justice Shelter - A Global Grassroots Movement

Panelist: Malya Levin

Malya Levin is the Assistant Director and General Counsel at The Weinberg Center. In this role, she represents victims of acute elder abuse from throughout New York City and Westchester County in a wide variety of legal fora. Malya has spoken extensively about various aspects of elder abuse to professional and community audiences, and has also published prolifically on the subject, with a primary focus on the role of legal tools and policies in elder abuse cases.
