On October 31, 2024, the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, Inc., together with the Employee Benefits Committee of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the American Bar Association (EBC) held a Law Student Outreach program at Georgetown Law Center in Washington, D.C.  The program speakers included Lisa Gomez, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA); Karen Morris, General Counsel of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation; Laura Warshawsky, Deputy Associate Chief Counsel for Employee Benefits at the Internal Revenue Service; Mayoung Nham, Principal at Slevin & Hart; Sara Pikofsky, Arbitrator; Peter Daines, Associate at Kilpatrick, Townsend & Stockton; Phyllis Borzi, former Assistant Secretary for EBSA, and moderated by John Harney, former Union Co-Chair of the EBC. After a brief explanation of Employee Benefits law, speakers discussed their career paths, their current positions and the opportunities in Employee Benefits Law.

Organized as a late afternoon reception, event organizers reached out to all five D.C. Law Schools and invited students interested in learning more about Employee Benefits law to attend. With 71 students registered for the event, students from three of the area law schools attended. Students who attended were engaged and took advantage of the extended Q&A portion of the program and the opportunity to network with a notable group of ERISA professionals.

The organizers wish to thank Georgetown Law School’s Workers Rights’ Institute for hosting our event. The Institute expressed an interest in working with the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, Inc. on retirement security issues of mutual interest sometime in the future.
