EUROPEAN UNION - New EU Directive on Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions Will Give Gig Workers More Rights

On June 13, 2019, the Council of the European Union (EU) adopted the European Parliaments proposal for a Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions Directive – a direct follow-up to the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights. The new law introduces new minimum rights, as well as new rules on the information to be provided to workers about their working conditions.

MEXICO - Protocol to Legitimate Existing Collective Bargaining Agreements in Mexico

On July 31, 2019, the Decree issuing the Protocol to legitimize existing collective bargaining agreements was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation. This was in compliance with Transitory Article Eleven, fifth paragraph of the Decree to amend, add, and repeal various provisions of the Federal Labor Law and other regulations in connection with Labor Justice, Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining, published on May 1, 2019, and the international commitments assumed by Mexico in the negotiation of the USMCA.

MEXICO - Amendment Approved Regarding Domestic Workers in Mexico

On July 2, 2019, the Official Federal Gazette published an amendment to the Federal Labor Law (“FLL”) and the Social Security Law (“SSL”), in connection with domestic workers (“Domestic Workers”). The purpose of this amendment is to improve their employment conditions, given their historic precarious employment conditions and vulnerability of rights to which they have been subject.
