See You in San Diego!

Midwinter Meeting Preview

Clarissa A. Kang

Mark your calendars to join us in San Diego, California, January 31 through February 3, 2024, for our Midwinter Meeting! We will kick off the Midwinter Meeting with a Law Student Outreach Program by our EBC members at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and University of San Diego School of Law during the lunch hour on Wednesday, January 31, followed by our welcome reception in the evening at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter. We are looking forward to two and one-half days of cutting-edge updates in employee benefits law and a lively exchange of ideas among our employee, union, management and public constituencies.

Our programming committee is hard at work organizing the educational panels. Educational programs start with a 2023 Employee Benefits Highlights panel in the morning on Thursday, February 1. Programming will include abortion and gender affirming care post-Dobbs and post-Bostock, a remedies update, multiemployer retirement plan issues, trends in disability and life insurance benefit litigation, best practices for due diligence regarding vendor contracts and insurance policies, mental health and substance use disorder benefits, ethics (including timely updates on social media and artificial intelligence), defined contribution plan fee and investment litigation, the new fiduciary rule, agency guidance on ESG and SECURE Act 2.0, and hot topics in health benefits. Long-standing Committee member, Assistant Secretary Lisa Gomez, U.S. Department of Labor, EBSA, will present the keynote address.

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is organizing our DEI luncheon and interactive program for Thursday, February 2. The pro bono committee is developing a Midwinter Meeting pro bono project, which will be supporting California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc., a decades-old nonprofit organization providing free civil legal services to low-income residents of California’s rural counties. Networking opportunities include three networking receptions and a breakfast for young/newer lawyers and new attendees.

We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of our EBC members and their organizations, financially and otherwise. Sponsorship opportunities for the Midwinter Meeting are available. (sponsorship-form.pdf (americanbar.org)) Sponsorships received by January 12, 2024, will be acknowledged on the Midwinter Meeting webpage and on signage at the meeting.

Online registration is available at Welcome - 2024 Employee Benefits Committee Midwinter Meeting (americanbar.org). Make your hotel reservations at the special group rate at 2024 Employee Benefits Midwinter Meeting - Start your reservation (passkey.com).
