By the time this column is published, the Appellate Judges Educational Institute Summit will be just over four months away. After more than a year of virtual meetings, we are all looking forward to gathering in person at the Hyatt Regency in Austin, November 11 to 14, 2021.
July 06, 2021 Council of Appellate Staff Attorneys
CASA Chair's Column
By William T. Owen, Nashville, TN
The Council of Appellate Staff Attorneys will be especially busy during the Summit. CASA members are involved in many of the Summit programs including “Legal Ethics 2.0: How Emerging Technologies Are Creating Novel Ethical Dilemmas,” “Hidden Cause, Visible Effect: Understanding the Supreme Court’s Shadow Docket,” “What Do Courts Do When Works of Faith Cross Works of Government,” and, of course, the civil and criminal “Supreme Court Review” by Dean Erwin Chemerinsky.
CASA will also hold its business meeting during the Summit and will elect a new executive board. Unlike most of the Judicial Division conferences, which elect their boards at the ABA Annual Meeting in August, CASA elects its board in the fall at the Summit. Finally, CASA will host its annual dinner, one of my favorite events of the year.
I urge all CASA members to reach out to their colleagues and encourage them to attend this year’s Summit. The programing promises to be outstanding as always and is especially relevant for what we do as appellate staff attorneys and law clerks. The Summit also represents our best opportunity to introduce our colleagues to CASA and to demonstrate just how valuable membership can be. Don’t forget that scholarships are available and that CASA members are given priority for scholarships.
If you are not a CASA member but are looking for an opportunity to connect with colleagues across the country, we would love for you to join us. You can contact me at [email protected] for more information on membership or the AJEI Summit.
