Best Practices for LGBTQ+ Persons in Custody: What Judges And Lawyers Need To Know

Presented by the ABA Judicial Division

Members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender persons, often face discrimination when placed in pre- trial custody, in prison, or in residential treatment programs. Raising awareness of real-life day-to-day needs will help judges make appropriate detention and sentencing decisions. Raising awareness of specific safety needs will help lawyers representing LGBTQ+ persons. The speakers bring a unique combination of front-line advocacy, lived experience, and courtroom and litigation background to the panel discussion.
