International Legal Developments Year in Review: 2017 (Volume 52, 2018)

Publication of the Year In Review

The Year in Review presents a survey of important political and legal developments in international law that occurred during 2017, prepared by knowledgeable members of the International Law Section, working through its Committees with expertise focused on substantive, geographic and affinity perspectives.

The 2017 edition of The Year in Review was produced in June 2018, under the leadership of:

  • Co-General Editors Jason Scott Palmer of Stetson University College of Law, and Kimberly Y.W. Holst of Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, Arizona State University;
  • Marc. I. Steinberg, Patricia S. Heard and Beverly Caro Duréus of SMU Dedman School of Law, Editor-in-Chief and Co-Executive Editors of The International Lawyer, respectively;
  • International Law Section Publications Officer Nancy Stafford; and,
  • the student editorial board of The International Lawyer.

This year marks the third annual recognition of exceptional contributions to the editorial process by the student editors at the SMU Dedman School of Law. Steinberg, Duréus, and Heard made the final selection of the 2018 award recipients, Caitlin Wilkinson and Kara Hargrove. Dr. Duréus, who has the direct supervisory responsibilities over the student editors as one of the Co-Executive Editors, stated:

“both of these young ladies were tremendous team players and through their unique gifts and personalities helped to make Volume 52 of The YIR to be extraordinary. Our decision about their nominations was unanimous. SMU is delighted that they are being rewarded with such a prestigious award.”

Dr. Duréus further noted that this fall will also represent a changing of the guard, as Publications Officer, Nancy Stafford, will begin her new role as the Section’s Budget Officer. Duréus not only thanked Stafford for her time in her post as Publications Officer but also her colleagues Steinberg and Heard, for being great team players and providing invaluable guidance concerning the Journal. She further stated:

“The Year in Review continues to be a success in large part due to the people who work behind the scene. We have a great cooperative relationship with the Section, and Maria Chhabria’s administrative assistance is second to none. Of course, we are also indebted to Professors Palmer and Holst and their team of deputy editors. Our staff of student editors, as well as our own administrative assistant, TaLibra Ferguson, also deserve a round of applause. Everyone involved plays an invaluable role in helping the Journal to be what it is.”

The Section extends hearty congratulations to all for a job well done!
