House Judiciary Committee announces its intent to adopt its "Authorization and Oversight Plan for the 115th Congress"

February 13, 2017

The House Judiciary Committee has announced its intent to adopt its "Authorization and Oversight Plan for the 115th Congress" later this week. In the plan, the Committee listed a host of agencies for which it plans to review their current authority and assess future needs, and for which it plans to provide oversight or to investigate their activities.

S.1890 - Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016

I learned that Senator Hatch (Senate President Pro Tempore) and Speaker Ryan are signing the bill today and forwarding it to the White House for the President to sign.

I also wanted to send you excerpts from the Floor debate on Wednesday in which Rep. Collins mentioned our support, and the Senate colloquy between Senators Hatch and Coons during which Senator Hatch mentioned our support and introduced our letter into the Congressional Record.

House Judiciary Committee Approve Bill Designed to Combat Patent Trolls

June 12, 2015

Yesterday the House Judiciary Committee debated amendments to H.R. 9, the "Innovation Act," and voted to report the bill favorably to the House of Representatives. H.R. 9 is designed as a legislative response to abusive patent infringement enforcement practices of so-called patent "trolls."

Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Patent Troll Bill

June 8, 2015

Today the Senate Judiciary Committee marked up S. 1137, the "PATENT Act," and by a vote of 16-4 ordered the bill favorably reported to the Senate.

The first action of the Committee was to adopt a Manager's Amendment consisting of an Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute to the bill as introduced. A copy of the Substitute is attached. The Substitute consists of the provisions of the bill as introduced on April 29, with the addition of several amendments to...

House Judiciary Committee IP Plans for 2015-2016

January 15, 2015

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte announced priorities for the Committee in the 114th Congress in a speech Tuesday at the Christian Science Monitor Breakfast. Two major intellectual property related initiatives are among Goodlatte's priorities. They are patent law reform to combat abusive enforcement practices of patent assertion entities or patent "trolls", and copyright law reform. Each of these initiatives was also the subject of extensive effort by the Committee in the 113th Congress.

Senate Hearing on President's Nominees to Head USPTO and IPEC

December 11, 2014

Yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee conducted a confirmation hearing on President Obama's nominees for two key intellectual property related leadership positions. The nominees, Daniel Marti to be Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator and Michelle Lee as Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, were the only witnesses.

Today the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 3309, the "Innovation Act," Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte's bill to address problems created by abusive litigation practices associated with patent trolls or "patent assertion entities."
