Mark T. Banner Award

This award is for an individual or group that has made an impact on intellectual property law and/or practice. Candidates will have expressed a clear passion and enthusiasm for, and advanced the practice, profession, and/or substance of, IP law through extraordinary contributions to, among other things, teaching, scholarship, innovation, legislation, advocacy, bar or other association activities, or the judiciary.

Initiatives

Young Lawyer Fellows Program

Each year, 3 young lawyers are chosen as Young Lawyer Fellows. The Fellows serve a two-year term during which they attend Section leadership meetings and work with a substantive committee, action group or operations board. Fellows can get involved in various projects such as writing for publications or speaking at an event. Fellows also participate in the work of the Membership Board.

Mentoring Program

In our experience, the mentoring relationships that one develops informally within the IP Bar are a wonderful supplement to those that we may experience in our workplaces. The ABA-IPL Mentoring Program is another step in our goal to promote inclusivity in the Section, as well as to ensure that the next generation of lawyers have the skills and opportunities they need to thrive and flourish in the profession.

Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP)

The ABA-IPL Section partners with the Section of Litigation in the JIOP program. JIOP's mission is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession, students with disabilities, veterans, students who are economically disadvantaged, students who identify themselves as LGBTQ+, and women.

Foundation for the Advancement of Diversity in IP Law (FADIPL)

The ABA-IPL Section is a founding partner of theFoundation, which provides scholarships to STEM-trained individuals with an interest in the advancement of diversity-minded individuals that are underrepresented in the patent law profession in the United States. Applicants must be seeking admission to an ABA-accredited law school.

A group of young lawyers visit different venues to identify, explain, and explore how intellectual property affects and shapes our daily lives. This video series highlights the importance of patent, trademark, copyright, and other intellectual property in real life situations.
