Chair’s Column: Cutting-Edge Infrastructure Advances

Kevin W. Jones

Iam honored to have the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Infrastructure and Regulated Industries Section for the current year. Many thanks to last year’s Chair, Linda Stein, for her excellent work in leading the Section and curating outstanding content that is both interesting and useful to our members and important to society at large.

While our Section is over a century old, we find ourselves increasingly engaged in cutting-edge issues of broad importance. The infrastructure that defines and enables modern life is evolving at rapid pace, bringing new challenges for how that infrastructure is developed, deployed, operated, maintained, and regulated.

The proliferation of renewable generation sources, increasing importance of access to high-speed internet, rapidly increasing deployment of artificial intelligence applications, growing prevalence of electric vehicles, renewed interest in nuclear generation technologies, developments in private space-based industries, and an increasingly critical need for deferred maintenance on ‘legacy’ infrastructure are just a few of the often intersecting challenges faced by the industries that our Section serves. These engaging topics have been the subject of recent Section program content and will be the focus of upcoming articles, CLE presentations, and podcasts.

As always, we welcome your input regarding Section program content and events. Please contact us with your ideas and consider lending your experience and perspectives to the ongoing work of the Section.

I close by recognizing the many important contributions of our Section Director, Susan Koz, over the course of her 37-year career with the ABA and her 24 years of service to our Section. We congratulate Susan on the occasion of her retirement and wish her all the best. Susan is a dedicated professional and a valued colleague. She will be greatly missed.
