Chair’s Column

By J. Bradley Fewell

I commend your attention to Bill Drexel’s Editor’s Column and to the articles he introduces. This issue of Infrastructure is yet another testament to our Section’s singular focus on infrastructure and the diversity of subjects and opinions that shape the dialogue around this topic. I suspect, and I think I am at least directionally correct, that this Section’s members are driven by an insatiable appetite for learning and are adept at discussing and challenging new perspectives. I know this is true as it relates to the leadership Council.

Today, it is more important than ever to engage in discussion recognizing the common humanity we all share. Of concern is what I perceive to be a preference to avoid, discourage, and, in some instances, even outlaw discussion on particular topics. We should all resist the desire to flee to the comfort of our perspective and shut out contradicting information. It is not what we do as lawyers, and it is not what we should do as members of society.

As I write this column, I am looking forward to our next in-person meeting!
