Today marks four years of the Clooney Foundation for Justice TrialWatch initiative, which was launched in partnership with the American Bar Association, Center for Human Rights. Since the project launch, the ABA Center for Human Rights has deployed monitors to 65 criminal trials in 28 countries all across the globe, with a focus on trials where there is a high risk of fair trial violations. The Center has monitored criminal proceedings against journalists, human rights defenders, activists, opposition politicians, and members of minority groups. Nearly half of these cases implicated the right to freedom of expression, including cases where journalists were charged in connection with their reporting on sensitive subjects and activists were targeted for protesting.
