Why Do We Need a Day of the Endangered Lawyer?

On January 24, the annual Day of the Endangered Lawyer was celebrated for the tenth time. When one talks about endangered lawyers, there’s an image of someone bravely standing tall in public, pointing at injustice, and demanding remedy. In some ways, this is right, as these courageous lawyers stand up to protect their clients and communities. In many other cases, however, lawyers are simply quietly going about their job without any spotlight when they find themselves confronting corrupt justice systems, authoritarian governments, and non-state actors who increasingly violate their rights.
