The Human Rights Impact Litigation Clinic of the American University Washington College of Law submitted a brief on April 25, 2016, in collaboration with the Justice Defenders Program, in the case of Dr. Pollo Rivera. The brief argues that Dr. Pollo Rivera was wrongfully imprisoned for allegedly providing medical care to combatants during the international armed conflict in Peru. Dr. Pollo Rivera was imprisoned twice on the same charges notwithstanding the fact that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights had held in another case that Peru was wrongfully detaining doctors providing care to combatants. The Center hopes that the decision of the Court in this case will help prevent future misuse of counterterrorism charges against medical professionals.
