On February 18, 2024, the World Health Organization (“WHO”) released an operational framework for monitoring social determinants of health equity. The WHO's framework provides a comprehensive approach for countries to systematically identify and tackle health inequities. It includes a step-by-step process for data collection, offers a menu of indicators to measure social determinants of health equity, and outlines how to use this data to inform evidence-based policies at both national and subnational levels. This initiative underscores the importance of renewing efforts to address social determinants of health, given the limited progress made since the WHO's Commission on Social Determinants of Health set out its agenda nearly two decades ago. The framework reflects WHO's commitment to advancing health equity and supporting countries in creating fairer societies and healthier lives.
