Rhode Island Nursing Home Cuts Half of Long-Term Care Beds Amid Insufficient Medicaid Funding

Scandinavian Communities, a 90-year-old nursing home facility in Rhode Island, announced last week that it will cut half of its long-term care beds due to financial struggles. The facility stated that Medicaid reimbursement rates account for this financial struggle as they are not increasing with the increasing cost of care. Facilities around Rhode Island are experiencing similar struggles. Leaders of LeadingAge and the Rhode Island Health Care Association stated that the “devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic” along with the $250 million in Medicaid cuts over the past decade have left Rhode Island’s nursing homes at a “breaking point.”
