Optum Buying Steward Medical Group

On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, embattled health care system, Stewardship Health Inc., communicated to Massachusetts state health officials that OptumCare, which is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, will purchase Steward Health Medical Group, which is part of Stewardship Heath. Steward Medical Group employs primary care physicians and other clinicians across nine states, according to the state’s Health Policy Commission.

Steward has been in the news for weeks after the healthcare system announced that it was in such deep financial trouble that it may need to close its eight hospitals in Massachusetts. The news has caused health care officials and political leaders to scramble to find a buyer for its facilities and operations, such as its hospitals and physician group.

U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) said in a statement: "With this announcement, Optum must demonstrate that it can meet the even greater responsibility to preserve and protect health care access in the Commonwealth, and I hope they will live up to that responsibility by controlling costs and putting patients and providers first."

The transaction will need to be reviewed and approved by the state’s Health Policy Commission and Department of Public Health before it becomes final.
