Transforming Maternal Health: CMS Unveils 10-Year Model for Improved Outcomes

On December 15, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new initiative, aimed at enhancing maternal health and birth outcomes. The Transforming Maternal Health (TMaH) Model is a 10-year payment and care-delivery model focused on prioritizing pregnant and postpartum women and their infants who are enrolled in Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). TMaH's initiatives revolve around improving access to resources like midwives, birth centers and doulas; implementing safety protocols;and delivering personalized, “whole-person” care to empower mothers and improve health outcomes, including reducing cesarean sections for low-risk pregnancies. CMS states that it will release a Notice of Funding Opportunity for state Medicaid agencies in Spring 2024.
