World Health Organization (WHO) Releases Guidance for Health Systems and other Stakeholders on Large Multi-Modal Models (LMMs).

The WHO recently published “Ethics and governance of artificial intelligence for health: Guidance on large multi-modal models” as guidance for health systems and other healthcare stakeholders on using large multi-modal models (“LMMs”). LMM usage, such as AI chatbots, has seen huge growth recently, raising many ethical and privacy concerns for how health systems can utilize these resources. The report “includes recommendations for governance, within companies, by governments and through international collaboration, aligned with the guiding principles.” This guidance encourages governments, regulatory bodies, and technology companies to be proactive and collaborate on developing LMMs for healthcare to combat some of the potential risks, such as inaccurate or biased outputs, cybersecurity/privacy concerns, and accessibility.
