Medicine Without Doctors? State Laws are Changing Who Treats Patients

For several years, there has been a continuing increase in the proposal of laws to expand the work of medical professionals who are not MDs or DOs. An increasing number of states are considering giving more independence to nurse practitioners and other medical professionals, no longer requiring physicians to sign off on their work. Despite a growing shortage of physicians, the AMA and physicians are pushing back.
